Now why haven't they released brook's 1970 King Lear with Paul Scofield yet? I had to buy a region 2 copy from Amazon UK.
I may have to check this one out though. Although I've heard the Edgar'Edmund subplot was taken out.

Thanks, Roger, but "burst my bubble...?" You write as if the "Catholic Bard" theory was dismissed by the scholarly community as a whole as Crankery, when it in fact (at least in terms of Catholic background, influence & sympathies, not necessarily personal faith) is an ongoing and lively debate with a growing list of estimable adherents, many if not most of them non-Catholics. There's Fr. Milward, of course, but there's also Stephen Greenblatt, Ernst Honigmann, Richard Wilson, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Eamon Duffy, Phebe Jensen...et al.

We were dazzled by the concept, the ensemble, Renaissance man Michael Elich -- everything, in fact, except the leading lady, Gwendolyn Mulambra. When two novice theater-goers turn to you at the end of the first act and ask the same question you have been wondering since Mulambra first opened her mouth to sing -- "Why can't Marian sing or act?" -- you have GOT to wonder what's going on. We saw the show early in the run. We have received reports from others who have seen the show since. All asked the same question. Go see the show. But be prepared for this rare OSF catastrophic piece of miscasting.
