Helen Mirren as Prospera!

The Guardian online has reported some exciting news for bardolators: Julie Taymor, director of the ultraviolent and imaginative reworking of Titus Andronicus, Titus, will be directing Helen Mirren in a big-screen adaptation of The Tempest.

Dame Helen, in a gender-switch from the original, will be playing Prospera, the usurped Duchess possessed of a vast library and magical powers. Mirren will be joined by a stellar cast: Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Irons, Ben Whishaw, and Alfred Molina.

Controversial filmmaker Peter Greenaway (who has worked with Mirren in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover), previously adapted The Tempest as the visually sumptuous and downright bizarre Prospero’s Books, featuring in the title role the Man with the Miraculous Vocal Chords: John Gielgud.

Mandy Patinkin on Broadway as Prospero

Here’s another “Put Money in my Purse—NYC” episode for all us financially challenged bardolaters: Mandy Patinkin is starring as Prospero in a Classic Stage Company production of The Tempest directed by Brian Kulick. To make matters worse, the show only runs through October 12, so there’s little time for me to go panhandling on the streets of Ashland for the trip. (Besides, I can’t sing or play guitar.)

For consolation—not much, I know—here’s a New York Times article on the actor and his prep for the role.

For more consolation (since I couldn’t find a vid anywhere on the net from the CSC production), here’s a little montage from Patinkin’s hysterical turn in that other classic, The Princess Bride:
